Fence Questions and Answers for Queens Homeowners

Short answers to the questions Queens homeowners bring us most. Our longer guides on cost, permits, repairs and neighbors are linked at the foot of the page.

How deep should fence posts be set?

Deep enough to resist frost and wind for the height of the fence. A common rule of thumb is about a third of the post length in the ground, and more for gate posts and tall solid panels. Frost is the local factor: the New York City Building Code sets building footings at least 4 feet below grade for frost protection, which shows how deep the ground can freeze here. We set the depth for your fence and soil on site.

Should posts be set in concrete, gravel or foam?

Concrete is our choice for gate posts, corners, tall fences and anything near the water. A few inches of gravel under the post lets water drain away from the bottom. Expanding foam is quick, but we would not rely on it for a gate or a 6-foot solid fence in coastal wind.

What if my yard is all concrete?

Then the posts go through or onto the slab. We core drill a round hole and set the post in concrete below, or bolt a base plate to the slab when it is thick and sound enough. This is everyday work in Queens, where many front courts and back yards are paved from wall to wall.

How long should I wait before staining a new wood fence?

Until the wood is dry enough to take stain. Sprinkle water on a board: if it soaks in, go ahead, and if it beads, wait. Pressure-treated pine arrives wet and can take weeks to a few months. Fences built in a damp spring or in a shaded yard dry more slowly.

How much does it cost to stain or seal a fence?

It varies with the area and the condition of the wood, so we do not quote a flat price. Ask us to list it separately on the estimate.

Can I use deck screws to fix loose pickets?

Yes, if they are rated for outdoor use. Near salt water choose stainless steel. Cedar stains black around plain steel fasteners, so use stainless or hot-dip galvanized screws on cedar anywhere in the borough.

Can a faded vinyl fence be painted?

It can, using paint made for vinyl. The paint will need redoing in time, and dark colors absorb heat and can distort the panels. Wash the fence well first. City grime and mildew often look like fading.

I want a double gate for an RV or trailer but my posts are weak. Reinforce or rebuild?

Rebuild the gate posts. A wide double gate needs its own heavy posts in deep concrete footings, and regular line posts will not carry it. We set new gate posts and rebuild the short section beside them. Measure the driveway first, since many Queens driveways are shared or too narrow for a wide swing.

Will salt air ruin my fence?

It will shorten the life of plain steel and cheap hardware. In Howard Beach, along Flushing Bay and on the north shore we use vinyl, aluminum, coated chain link and stainless or galvanized fittings. Rinsing metal fences with fresh water now and then helps.

Does a new fence raise my property taxes?

Ask the NYC Department of Finance, which sets property values in the city. A fence is a small item compared with the house and lot.
