Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per linear foot in 2026, or $3,000 to $9,000 for 150 feet. Those are national figures. What you pay in Queens depends on city labor rates, the material, whether the yard is soil or concrete, and whether everything has to be carried through the house.
Price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, not our own quotes. New York City labor, material prices and the conditions on your lot move the real number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does a fence cost per foot?
| Material | Installed cost per foot |
|---|---|
| Chain link | $9 to $30 |
| Wood | $20 to $50 |
| Vinyl | $30 to $60 |
| Aluminum | $25 to $75 |
| Wrought iron | $50 to $85 |
How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?
The national range for a 6-foot privacy fence is $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below shows totals by length for a typical fence at $20 to $60 per foot. A full-height solid fence needs more lumber and heavier posts, so expect the upper half of each row. Many Queens back yards are short, which keeps the footage low even when the price per foot is not.
| Fence length | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 50 feet | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| 100 feet | $2,000 to $6,000 |
| 150 feet | $3,000 to $9,000 |
| 200 feet | $4,000 to $12,000 |
What is the cheapest fence to have installed?
Chain link. The national figures start it near $9 per foot. For privacy at the lowest price, a simple stockade or dog-ear board fence in pressure-treated pine usually wins. If you only need to keep a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5 or 6 foot chain link does it, and privacy slats can go in later.
Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?
It is cheaper than wrought iron and close to vinyl. The national ranges are $25 to $75 per foot for aluminum, $50 to $85 for wrought iron and $30 to $60 for vinyl. Aluminum also does not rust, which counts near Jamaica Bay, Flushing Bay and the East River, where salt air works on steel and iron.
How much extra does a gate cost?
Each gate is its own line on the estimate, not part of the footage. The price follows the width, the material and the hardware. A walk gate for a front court is the smallest item. A driveway gate costs more, and one with an operator costs the most.
How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?
We price those after seeing the lot. In Queens the common extras are different from the suburbs: taking down and hauling away the old fence, drilling through a concrete or paved yard, carrying materials through a house or a narrow alley because there is no side access, and cutting back vines or weed trees along the line. Slopes come up mostly on the ridge and the north shore.
I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?
Line them up item by item. Compare the footage, the height, the material and its grade, post size and depth, how posts are set in a paved yard, the gates, removal of the old fence and cleanup. The low bid has often left one of those out. Then check that each company holds a Home Improvement Contractor license from the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, because a bid from an unlicensed company is not a like-for-like comparison.
Does a fence add value to my home?
It can help a sale, since buyers with children or dogs look for a fenced yard, but do not count on getting the full cost back. For property taxes, the NYC Department of Finance is the office that values property, so put that question to them.
